The CWB Welding Foundation is a national not-for-profit registered charity, founded by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) in 2013. With the support of government, educators, industry, corporate partners and community organizations, we address the needs of Canadian industry for skilled professionals in welding, fabrication and allied processes and technologies.
Through education-based programs and initiatives, we reduce barriers that affect key groups; elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students, educators, Indigenous Peoples, women, and the under-represented. We envision a future where all individuals have the opportunity to explore and the knowledge and awareness to choose a career that allows them to reach their full potential.
We focus on access to careers in trades and technology, utilizing welding as a gateway skill with many career pathways in high demand across North American industry sectors.
We envision a future where all individuals are encouraged and provided the support needed to reach their true career potential regardless of identity factors, social and financial status, and lived experiences including gender, age, ethnicity, language, literacy, culture, income, and geographical location.
To forge partnerships between industry, education and government that enable Canadians to build great careers in welding and related industries through encouraging awareness, training, and the promotion of best practices through a quality educational experience, impartial advocacy and greater accessibility.
To support Canadian industry in having a sustainable labour supply of skilled welding professionals who contribute to our economic prosperity and global competitiveness.

In 2011, the CWB Group recognized that their activities concerning industry support at the time weren’t enough to meet the significant challenges the industry was facing. While welding jobs have been plentiful, Canada has struggled to produce a steady flow of skilled tradespeople for decades. There are many causes for the shortage, such as lack of exposure to the trades, stigmatization that skilled trades aren’t for everyone, and the growing disparity between tradespeople retiring and those entering the workforce.
Needing to take action to support welding and welding related industries, educators and the Canadian economy, the CWB Welding Foundation was created in April 2013 as a federal non-share capital corporation with Registered Charitable Status.
Since then, the CWB Welding Foundation has grown and focused increasing attention on expanding its programs and initiatives to encourage, inspire, and support more Canadians in becoming part of the welding industry with a strong focus on youth, women, Indigenous Peoples and under-represented groups.
CWB Welding Foundation spearheaded significant change across Canada. We’ve listened and responded to needs identified by our key stakeholders: students, educators, welders, industry, and government. We’ve responded with programs and investments to close the skills gap and pave the way for Canada to take a leadership position in forging our future. We continue to innovate and evolve proactively to meet industry needs.
