2020 Student award recipients

For some students, it’s the opportunity to create something lasting with their hands. For others, it’s the chance to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career. And for some, it’s the excitement of making sparks fly. But the one thing that the recipients of the 2020 CWB Welding Foundation student awards have in common is a passion for welding.

The CWB Welding Foundation is pleased to announce the 2020 recipients of the Joseph G. Doria Exemplary Student Award and the Hugh A. Krentz Exemplary Student Award. This year, eight students are receiving awards to support them in their post-secondary welding education.

“The CWB Welding Foundation’s student awards program was established to recognize deserving students who are pursuing post-secondary education in welding,” said Susan Crowley, Executive Director of the CWB Welding Foundation. “We received a number of very strong applications this year, so we are delighted that we can expand our awards program and help even more students achieve their goals.”

JOSEPH G. DORIA EXEMPLARY STUDENT AWARD

This award was established in 2013 to promote and encourage the pursuit of a career in welding. It is meant to support graduating Canadian secondary school students entering a full-time welding technician or welding engineering technology program. The 2020 recipients are:

  • Alexandria Gawhary – $3,000 (Conestoga College)
  • Lucas Bushen – $1,000 (Conestoga College)
  • Cierra St. Germain – $1,000 (Cambrian College)
  • Nathan Palmerton – $1,000 (Conestoga College)
  • Madison Whiting – $1,000 (Cambrian College)

“I would like to congratulate all of the 2020 student award recipients,” said Mr. Joseph Doria. “As the past President and CEO of Lincoln Electric Company of Canada and an active member of the CWB Group Board of Directors, I have a passion for supporting the next generation of welders. This year’s recipients exemplify the passion and dedication we love to see in welding students.”

HUGH A. KRENTZ EXEMPLARY STUDENT AWARD

This award was established in 2015 to support Canadian students entering their final year of study in a minimum two-year welding undergraduate program. The 2020 recipients are:

  • Tyler Martin – $3,000 (Conestoga College)
  • Farid Shigapov – $3,000 (Conestoga College)
  • Patrick Breton – $1,000 (Cégep de Trois-Rivières)

“This year’s recipients showed outstanding academic excellence, and a demonstrated passion and career interest in the welding industry,” said Mr. Hugh Krentz, past President of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction and past Chairman of the Standards Council of Canada. “I am honoured to help and encourage young people who wish to pursue careers in welding and the skilled trades.”

The CWB Welding Foundation provides a range of awards and bursaries to help welding students continue their journey. In addition to the Doria and Krentz awards, the Foundation also supports the Indspire Building Bright Futures Awards for Indigenous youth in Canada; the TransCanada Trades Scholarship open to youth pursuing trades training at the post-secondary level; the Nicole LeClair Welding Bursary Award; graduate scholarships in welding engineering at the University of Waterloo and University of Alberta; and a number of additional scholarships and bursaries at other Canadian post-secondary institutions.
