2019 HUGH A. KRENTZ STUDENT AWARD WINNER MEGAN REPPARD ON LEARNING, GROWING AND GIVING BACK TO THE INDUSTRY

-Excerpt-

For Megan Reppard, the best thing about working in the welding industry is that there isn’t just one path to career success.

“You can be a welder, iron worker, welding supervisor, welding engineer, metallurgical engineer or inspector—the opportunities are endless,” said Megan. “There is also the opportunity to travel, explore other cultures, meet new people and see the world, all while working.”

Megan’s future is bright. She is currently enrolled in her final year of the Welding Engineering Technology program at Northern College in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. After graduation, she plans to pursue certification from the International Institute of Welding so she can take advantage of the opportunity to work in different countries and explore the world while furthering her experience as a technologist.

In recognition of Megan’s academic excellence, hard work and passion, the CWB Welding Foundation awarded her the 2019 Hugh A. Krentz Student Award. This national award was established in 2015 to honour the contributions of Mr. Krentz as a member of the CWB Group Board of Directors, Past President of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, and Past Chairman of the Standards Council of Canada.

Megan has demonstrated her commitment to the industry through her volunteer work. Over the past few years, Megan has volunteered at several CWB Welding Foundation Mind Over Metal Welding camps, where she has shared her knowledge and passion with future generations of potential welders. Mind Over Metal camps give students aged 12-15 the opportunity to gain hands-on welding experience in a safe and supportive learning environment.

“The camps are a fantastic and unique opportunity for young people to be exposed to welding and experiment before entering high school. I found volunteering at these camps to be extremely rewarding.”
